Can I Call Myself a Runner If I Walk During My Runs?

dream new runner run-walk Nov 10, 2024

Ever wonder if walking during your runs means you’re not a ‘real’ runner?
I used to feel the same way. Growing up, I wasn’t athletic, and when I started running as an adult, I thought walking was a sign of failure. It wasn’t until I trained for a marathon using the run-walk method that I realized how wrong I was.

Here’s the truth: running isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress, persistence, and showing up for yourself. Whether you run, walk, or do a mix of both, you’re still a runner—and your goals are just as valid.

How I Conquered My Running Goals with the Run-Walk Method
Running a marathon was a bucket list goal I’d carried for years, but the thought of running 42.2 km nonstop? Terrifying. I’d never considered myself a ‘real’ runner and doubted I could handle the distance. Even to this day I would be unable to run a full marathon non-stop (and honestly I have no desire to do so either).

But then I discovered the run-walk method. Instead of running nonstop, I broke the race into manageable intervals: running for 9 minutes and walking for 1 minute. Those short walking breaks helped me stay strong physically and mentally. On marathon day, I crossed the finish line in tears, screaming to the cheering crowd, “I’m a marathoner!”

Here’s what I learned: 42.2 km is 42.2 km—whether you run the entire way or take walk breaks. The only thing that matters is showing up and finishing what you start.

Want to Try Run-Walk? Here’s How to Start:
Not sure how to incorporate walking into your runs? Start simple:

  • Run for 2 minutes, walk for 1, and repeat for 20-30 minutes.
  • As your stamina improves, adjust the intervals to fit your comfort level.
  • Remember, consistency is key—whether you’re running, walking, or both.

Ready to Overcome Your Running Doubts?
If you’ve ever hesitated to call yourself a runner because you’re not fast or don’t run nonstop, I’m here to tell you: you belong. Running isn’t about perfection—it’s about taking that first step and showing yourself what’s possible.
